Trump’s new bid to curtail birthright citizenship

Donald Trump announced new executive orders aimed at narrowing birthright citizenship and curbing birth tourism, while the 2026 Little League World Series saw North Carolina defeat Florida to advance toward the championship.

Key points:

President Donald Trump issued executive orders to limit automatic citizenship and target alleged birth‑tourism after a Supreme Court ruling found his prior effort unconstitutional.

The new Trump policy is described as more narrowly tailored and would affect fewer children born in the United States.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn secured the GOP nomination for Tennessee governor, as noted in the briefing.

Rhode Island’s recession may have ended, says URI economist

[et_pb_section admin_label=”section”]
[et_pb_row admin_label=”row”]
[et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text”]WHAT: Rhode Island’s economic performance for June offers a glimmer of hope that the state’s recession may have ended, according to University of Rhode Island economist Leonard Lardaro. June’s Current Conditions Index value, of 58, not only improved from June’s 50 but it’s also the highest CCI recorded this year.

It was also the third time in the last four months that a monthly CCI showed at least 50, which is a neutral value, or better—above 50 is expansion and below is contraction. Those indexes reflect “some upward momentum,” Lardaro said, and that Rhode Island is in the early stages of economic recovery.

Seven of the CCI’s 12 economic indicators improved in June relative to a year ago, and June’s CCI of 58 also matches the index from July 2025.

Retail Sales, a critical economic indicator that has been a strength through almost the entire post-pandemic period, grew by 11.8% in June. Total Manufacturing Hours continued its growth, increasing by 6.6%. Manufacturing Wage also grew by 2.6%—showing increases in back-to-back months.

Benefits Exhaustion, which indicates long-term unemployment, decreased by 6.1%—improving for the fifth time in the last six months. Single-Unit Permits, related to new home construction, rose in June by 50.6%.

The Unemployment Rate dropped by 0.2% in June, however Lardaro says data revisions in February are needed to see a more accurate picture on the true rate.

Employment Service Jobs, a leading labor market indicator, improved for the first time in more than a year, increasing by 1.1%. U.S. Consumer Sentiment continued its consistent monthly declines, dropping by 18.5%, Lardaro says.

Government Employment also fell by 1.8%, attributed to declines in federal government employment, Lardaro says, while Private Service-Producing Employment, a proxy for service-sector employment, dropped in June by 0.4%.

HOW: Use attached information, including summary and charts prepared by Lardaro for news reports. He is available for broadcast and print interviews. Lardaro will be blogging about the new labor data during the coming weeks.

WHEN: Aug. 4, 2026

FOR INFORMATION: Leonard Lardaro, office, 401-874-4128, home, 401-783-9563; James Bessette, URI Department of Communications and Marketing, 401-874-3520, james.bessette@uri.edu.

BACKGROUND: The Current Conditions Index, created by Lardaro, measures the strength of the present economic climate in Rhode Island by following the behavior of 12 indicators.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column]

295 Jobs, One Circular: What Namibia’s Latest Public Service Vacancy List Tells Us

Every month, the Office of the Prime Minister’s Department of Public Service Management quietly publishes one of the most consequential documents for job seekers in Namibia: the PSM Circular. It’s dense, bureaucratic, and 170 pages long — which is exactly why most people never read past the first few listings. But buried in that formatting are 295 real openings across nearly every corner of government, from Windhoek head offices to district hospitals in the regions.

We went through the full text of PSM Circular No. F of 2026, advertised on 4 August 2026 with a closing date of 2 September 2026, and broke down exactly where the jobs are.

The Headline Number: 295 Positions, 19 Institutions

The circular spans the Office of the Prime Minister, the National Council, seven line ministries, and ten Regional Councils. Here’s how the openings are distributed:

PSM Circular No. F of 2026 — Vacancies by Office/Ministry/Agency

A single circular, in other words, is a snapshot of where the state is actually hiring right now — and this month, it’s overwhelmingly in health and in the regions.

Health Care Is Carrying the Circular

More than any other single line, Health and Social Services alone accounts for 56 posts — nearly a fifth of everything advertised. And that’s before counting the dozens of additional health posts embedded inside the Regional Council listings, where Hardap, Omusati, Kavango West, Omaheke and others are each recruiting their own Registered Nurses, Pharmacists, Medical Officers, Radiographers, Social Workers, and Environmental Health Practitioners for district hospitals and clinics.

Add it up and clinical and allied health roles are arguably the single largest job category in the entire circular — a clear signal of where Namibia’s public healthcare system is feeling the staffing pressure this cycle.

The Regions Are Where the Volume Is

If you’re scanning this circular for opportunity outside Windhoek, the Regional Councils are where to look. Collectively, the ten councils listed here account for more than 200 of the 295 posts — well over two-thirds of the entire circular.

  • Hardap Regional Council tops the list with 47 openings, dominated by health posts (Registered Nurses, Pharmacists, Dentists, Radiographers) alongside education and administrative roles.
  • Erongo Regional Council follows with 36, including a striking run of “Head of Department Grade 6” posts — suggesting a broad restructuring or expansion of school leadership in the region.
  • Omusati Regional Council rounds out the top three with 29, again weighted heavily toward district health services.

If you’re a nurse, pharmacist, or allied health professional willing to relocate, this circular is disproportionately written for you.

Works and Transport: The Trades Ministry

The Ministry of Works and Transport stands out for a different reason — it’s the only major ministry where skilled trades dominate. Its 30 listed posts include Artisans, Artisan Foremen, and Works Inspectors specializing in welding, auto/diesel mechanics, and electrical work, mostly attached to regional depots like Khorixas and Karasburg. It’s a reminder that “public service jobs” isn’t shorthand for desk work — a good chunk of this circular is skilled manual and technical labor keeping government infrastructure running.

Diplomacy and Central Government: Smaller but Senior

By contrast, the Office of the Prime Minister (6 posts), National Council (4), and Ministry of International Relations and Trade (8) show far fewer openings — but skew toward more senior, specialized roles: Deputy Directors, policy analysts, and trade promotion officers based almost exclusively in Windhoek. Fewer seats, but each one carries more institutional weight.

What This Tells Job Seekers

A few practical takeaways if you’re navigating this circular yourself:

  1. If you’re in healthcare, don’t just check the Ministry of Health listing. The real number of clinical vacancies is spread across at least six additional Regional Councils.
  2. Windhoek isn’t the only game in town. The bulk of the volume — and arguably the best odds — is in regional postings, especially in Hardap, Erongo, and Omusati.
  3. Trades and technical roles are a real, underused pathway into public service, concentrated almost entirely in Works and Transport this cycle.
  4. Applications close 2 September 2026. Every application must go in on the prescribed Form 156043, addressed to the relevant Executive Director or Chief Regional Officer — a separate form for each post applied for.

Circulars like this one rarely get read cover to cover, but they’re arguably the clearest public record of where government capacity is being built — or rebuilt — month to month. This one says a lot about where Namibia’s public service needs people most: in clinics, in classrooms, and in the regions.

This analysis is based on PSM Circular No. F of 2026, issued by the Office of the Prime Minister’s Department of Public Service Management on 4 August 2026.
