Summary

The U.S. Mission in Gaborone, Botswana is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Registered Nurse. The position may be subject to overtime work, which will be accordingly compensated. Candidates must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time of receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications, or their candidacy may end.

Duties

The incumbent serves as the post’s nurse, responsible for the medical care of Mission employees and eligible family members under MED-approved clinical guidelines. Key responsibilities include:

• Maintenance and inventory of all medical equipment and supplies.
• Implementation of a robust vaccination program.
• Administration of group and individual health education programs.
• Medical emergency contingency planning for the Mission.
• Evaluating and assessing patients through health history, observation, interview, physical examination and selected diagnostic measures.
• Reviewing and interpreting medical history and records, applying appropriate diagnostic measures.
• Selecting appropriate actions including treatment, referral for additional care, or collaborative care with Medical Unit providers.

The incumbent will work in the Medical Unit under the direct supervision of the Regional Medical Officer (RMO) or Medical Provider (MP).

Qualifications & Requirements

Experience

• A minimum of two (2) years of post-qualification work as a professional nurse is required.

Education

• Degree (RN Level) in Nursing or Diploma/Certificate equivalent from an accredited School of Nursing.
• Must possess and maintain a valid, current unrestricted Registered Nursing license from the host nation, country of origin, or the U.S.

Job Knowledge

• Critical-thinking skills and understanding of MED’s policies and procedures regarding medical evacuations, hospitalizations and insurance reimbursement methodology.
• Current knowledge of local and regional medical services able to provide care for all acuity levels, including specialists and hospitals.

Language

• English Level 3 (Good Working Knowledge) – Reading/Writing/Speaking required.

Skills & Abilities

• Strong interpersonal skills and a client-oriented disposition, able to handle complex, difficult and emotional situations.
• Solid working knowledge of MED’s RN Clinical Practice Guidelines and familiarity with American Nursing Standards of Care.
• Ability to perform basic word processing on a computer (may be tested).
